Senior Director, Talent & Leadership Development

Sonya is a strategic thinker, who approaches challenges with curiosity, optimism, and practicality. Her expertise and approachability make her a trusted advisor to clients and colleagues. Prior to joining Royer Thompson, Sonya worked for a global consulting firm and held a leadership role at TD Bank. She brings a wealth of experience from working with diverse organizations, including many multinational and Fortune 500 companies, across various industries including healthcare, financial services, professional services, utilities, construction, retail, and government. Sonya has a strong focus on developing evidence-based and practical solutions that drive tangible organizational impact.

At Royer Thompson, Sonya supports organizations to leverage the full potential of their people by partnering with clients to create the leadership culture necessary to fulfill strategic goals and drive future success – this includes building leadership competency models, cascading competencies through the organization, and working with clients to develop strategies to make competencies ‘stick’. She conducts and consults on talent assessment for selection, succession and professional development. Sonya believes assessment is often the first step to any successful engagement. While the individual results are always personally impactful, there is an incremental value that can be unlocked by leveraging individual and aggregate assessment results in strategic decision making. She designs and facilitates high impact, evidence-based learning programs. With strong experience in understanding learning effectiveness, Sonya ensures she designs programs that are enjoyable and have an enduring impact. Sonya facilitates team development, by helping leadership teams understand themselves (through assessment), their shared mandate, and how they can work best together to fulfill their strategic objectives. She engages in executive coaching¬ to support leaders to unlock their potential. She is known for her ability to build trusted and authentic relationships with her clients. She supports her clients to achieve their goals with a high degree of both warmth and honesty. Sonya supports clients with successful succession management strategies.

Sonya holds a Masters and Ph.D. in Industrial-Organizational Psychology from Saint Mary’s University and a BSc in Psychology from Dalhousie University. She is a Registered Psychologist (Ontario) and International Coaching Federation certified coach (ACC). She has completed advanced training in Return on Investment (ROI) methodology and is certified in many leadership and personality assessment tools. She is also a published academic author and an active member of various professional associations.

Outside of work, Sonya enjoys cooking, yoga, traveling and spending quality time with her husband and two children.
