Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Claims Counsel/Examiner plays a crucial role in managing the defence of claims against HOPA’s subscribing healthcare organizations. The Claims Counsel/Examiner will conduct a thorough analysis of claims, assess claim merit, review precedent conditions for resolution, ensure proper documentation and communicate effectively with Subscriber organizations. The Claims Counsel/Examiner will collaborate closely with external counsel and experts when necessary to mitigate exposure and achieve successful outcomes. In addition to claim management, the Claims Counsel/Examiner will assist in collecting and analyzing claims data to deliver targeted risk management initiatives to member organizations.
The ideal candidate for this position will have a minimum of 4 years of legal practice focusing on insurance defence, and/or medical malpractice, professional liability or healthcare law, or minimum of 4 year claims examination experience in property & casualty and/or professional liability. Demonstrating a strong ability to analyze complex situations and develop strategies for interest-based resolution, they will also possess a natural curiosity, staying up to date with industry trends and developments. Excellent interpersonal skills and effective communication abilities are essential for collaborating with internal and external stakeholders. Strong organizational skills are necessary for prioritizing tasks and meeting deadlines successfully. The preferred candidate will exhibit a proactive approach to their work, thrive in a team environment, demonstrate initiative, deliver compelling presentations, and leverage technology to enhance their work.
