The Faculty of Education at St. Francis Xavier University is recognized for cultivating an inclusive and progressive approach to teaching, learning, and scholarship in elementary, secondary, adult, community, graduate, and continuing education. The Faculty has earned a reputation for social justice, culturally appropriate pedagogy, advancing new teaching pedagogies, and learning from diverse cultures, particularly in Mi’kmaq and African Nova Scotian communities.

The StFX Faculty of Education offers a multitude of professional programs including: A Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.), a Master of Education (M.Ed.), Diploma and Masters in Adult Education (M.Ad.Ed.), an interdisciplinary PhD in Educational Studies, and Continuing and Distance Education. Well organized and aligned strategically, leadership within the Faculty of Education is proactive in setting program priorities and in ensuring resources are aligned to attract and retain top faculty to support scholarship, teaching, accreditation, and national standing as a provider of teacher education and adult and community learning.

Reporting to the Vice President, Academic and Provost, the Dean is a member of the Senior Administration Team and is responsible for the vision and leadership of the Faculty of Education; academic programming; planning and budgeting; and ensuring smooth delivery of programs. The Dean is an inclusive leader who exhibits a high degree of professionalism and is committed to the sustainability of the Faculty of Education by developing and building responsive programs.

The successful candidate is strategic, innovative, and a high-impact leader with a track record of success in academic scholarship and administrative leadership, setting clear expectations, inspiring people, collaborating internally and externally, and managing effectively. The Dean sets a collegial tone and fosters an innovative mindset in academic programming within the Faculty of Education, engaging faculty, staff, students, communities, and community members in building programs, peer mentoring, and expanding teaching and scholarship opportunities. The Dean maintains and strengthens relationships with other universities, community colleges, the Nova Scotia Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, Regional Centres for Education, and Mi’kmaq and African Nova Scotia education leaders.

The successful candidate has a PhD in Education or Adult Education and a passion for public, private, or band operated schools, adult, community, and continuing education. The successful candidate should have extensive experience in P-12 schools, as well as experience in administrative roles in an academic context. The Dean is an established scholar and a leader in promoting teaching and learning, professional development, and scholarship at the university and college level. The Dean has a collaborative working spirit and is immersed in and committed to diversity and inclusion, especially as it pertains to Indigenous and African Canadian communities. They should be familiar with the University’s wide array of programs and cohorts.
